La "Société des Masques" : Les danses masquées se pratiquent à l'occasion des funérailles pour hommes et du Dama. Elles sont régies par la "Société des Masques". Cette société regroupe tous les hommes circoncis, jeunes et vieux. Les garçons y entrent après la circoncision. L'autorité s'établit selon l'âge. Beaucoup de membres taillent leur propre masque.

Auparavant, selon les mythes Dogon, la mort n'existait pas. Les hommes se métamorphosaient en serpent. Pourtant, suite à la transgression d'un interdit, les Dogon furent exposés à la mort. La "Société des Masques" célèbre le culte du premier ancêtre qui mourut sous forme de serpent suite à une rupture d'interdit. Depuis, la mort fut transmise aux hommes par contagion (A ne pas confondre avec l'ancêtre Lébé Seru qui est immortel).

The "Society of the Masks" celebrates the cult of the first ancestor who died in the form of a serpent after having transgressed a taboo. Ever since that time, death has been transmitted to men through contagion (not to be confounded with the ancestor "Lebe Seru" who resurrected and who is immortal).
